ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- It was a winning weekend for the Maryland women's tennis team, with three players taking home championships at the Navy Blue and Gold Invitational hosted by the Naval Academy this weekend.
Sophomores Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka and Saya Usui each captured their respective singles bracket championships on Sunday, giving Maryland its first singles tournament victories of the season. Yemelyanenka earned a 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 comeback win in the 'Singles A' championship over Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva of UCONN, while Usui knocked off Carlee Conway of Navy, 6-1, 6-3, in the 'Singles B' championship match.
Yemelyanenka also teamed up with freshman Zoe Kulkarni in the doubles bracket. The duo overcame a strong effort from Hodge/Keller of Navy to take home the 'Doubles A' flight, 6-4.
"I'm very proud of these girls this weekend," head coach Daria Panova said. "We posted a 12-1 overall record in the tournament and they all played hard throughout every single set. We faced some adversity and we just got tougher each time. It was a great weekend and we're looking forward to ITA Regionals in a few days."
Maryland will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 13, in Blacksburg, Va., for the ITA Regional Tournament. Last year Maryland captured the doubles title at the event, sending then-seniors Kristina Hovsepyan and Alexandra Stanova to New York for the ITA National Indoors.
