Maryland Celebrates Season at Team Banquet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland softball team honored its four seniors and reflected on its 2018 campaign Sunday evening at the team's annual banquet. Administrators, support staff members, family, friends and supporters joined coaches and players for dinner at Heritage Hall in the XFNITY Center. 

Attendees listened to speeches from head coach Julie Wright, the freshmen class, media relations contact Keith Sneddon, strength coach Bowie Matteson, team trainer Kyle Niswonger, a reflection on the seniors from Anna Kufta and Hannah Eslick as well as each senior.

Skylynne Ellazar, Destiney Henderson, Jacqui Pascual and Mikayla Werahiko each received framed jerseys in addition to other gifts and tokens of appreciation from teammates and staff.

The night concluded with a final word from coach Wright while presenting team awards.

2017-18 Award Honorees 

Most Valuable Player

Skylynne Ellazar – Ellazar started in every game for the Terps this season, while leading the Terps in virtually every offensive category. She ranked first on the team in batting average (.319), runs (28), home runs (8), RBIs (23), slugging pct. (.525), on base pct. (.412) and stolen bases (7). Ellazar came through in clutch moments for the Terps this season, including a go-ahead home run to clinch the series vs. Penn State, and a solo shot against Iowa to help Maryland secure a sweep over the Hawkeyes.

Offensive Player of the Year

Jacqui Pascual – Pascual enjoyed her best year as a Terp this year as a senior, playing in 40 games with 35 starts. Despite battling injuries throughout the year, Pasucal developed into one of the team’s most productive hitters. She carved out a starting role for the Terps at first base this season, notching 12 RBIs, three doubles and a triple. Pascual’s signature moment came on April 17, when she delivered a walk off hit against Rutgers to complete a six-run comeback win for the Terrapins.

Defensive Player of the Year

Ryan Denhart – Denhart made an immediate impact for the Terrapins in her first collegiate season, holding a team-best 3.80 ERA in 180.2 innings pitched (6th most in the B1G). She struck out 92 batters on the season, the most by a Maryland freshman since 2006. Denhart posted 10 wins and one save, while also tossing 11 complete games including one shutout on the year.

Maryland Pride Award

Sami Main – Main was named the team's Maryland Pride award winner for exhibiting pride for her state and school all season long. The Frederick, Md. native carries one of the highest GPAs on the team, and is praised by teammates and coaches for putting the team before herself. This is the third consecutive Maryland Pride Award for Main, who was inducted into UMD ODK Sigma Circle Leadership Honor Society this year.

Clubhouse Award

Hannah Eslick – Eslick was named the team’s clubhouse award winner for her constant support and team-first mentality throughout her first season at Maryland. On the field, Eslick was impressive in tight spots during the year, including a game-tying three-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth against Indiana on April 14. The Glen Burnie, Md. made her first career hit count, driving in the game-winning RBI against Middle Tennessee on February 11 in just her second career at bat. Eslick came through in a big moment against St. Francis (PA) on April 11, driving a two-RBI single to the outfield to give the Terps the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
