LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Maryland erased a one-run deficit in the late innings to beat Middle Tennessee State (1-4) Sunday at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament for its first win of the season. Freshman Hannah Eslick drove in the game-winning run in her second career at bat to secure the victory as the Terps move to 1-4 on the year.

Junior Sydney Golden was clutch down the stretch throwing the final 3.2 innings for the Terps, allowing just two hits and striking out two to earn the victory.

Down 1-0 after four innings, Maryland finally broke through in the top of the fifth with two outs. Sophomore Kassidy Cross stepped into the box and smashed her first career home run to right center field to even the game at one. UMD would get consecutive hits from Skylynne Ellazar and Jacqui Pascual after Cross’s homer, but a strikeout ended the frame.

The Terps went right back to work in the sixth, after Anna Kufta walked with one out to get on. It was then Eslick came to the plate, driving a ball into the right center gap to score a sliding Kufta at the plate. It was the first career hit and RBI for the Glen Burnie, Md. native, and gave Maryland its first lead of the game.

From there, Golden closed things out allowing just one base runner in the final two frames. Middle Tennessee would manage an infield single to start off the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout and double play clinched the victory.

The Terps will return to action next weekend for four games at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
