COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Maryland gymnastics team set a new attendance record of 2,207 fans in Saturday evening’s 194.575-197.125 falter to #5 Michigan. The Terrapins (1-5, 1-3 B1G) recorded their second-highest team total of the season and the highest at home. Senior Ebony Walters tallied a team high individual score of 9.850 on floor and tied for second individually on the event.
“Our crowd was phenomenal tonight,” Head coach Brett Nelligan said, “People love to come to these Maryland Pride meets. It’s a lot of fun for our student-athletes and we are just so thankful and excited to be able to compete in front of them.”
The GymTerps started the meet on vault (48.850) registering the second-highest team total at home. Senior Katy Dodds tallied a 9.800 and tied for fourth individually on the apparatus. Shannon Skochko, Kathy Tang and Abbie Epperson all scored a 9.775 on the event as well.
“We’re a team on the upswing,” Senior Katy Dodds said after the meet, “We are trying to improve every meet and hit all of our routines. The team has been gaining a lot of confidence.”
Maryland then moved to bars (48.850), where they tied their team score for the season. Anchor Karen Tang scored a team-high 9.825. In the third rotation, the Terrapins tallied a 48.050 on beam. Leah Slobodin made her XFINITY Center debut with a 9.775. Stephanie Giameo tied for fourth individually with a 9.825.
In the final rotation the team registered the best team score on floor in two meets, 48.825. Ebony Walters scored a 9.850 for the Terps, while Kathy Tang and Katy Dodds added a 9.800 and 9.775 on the event respectively.
The GymTerps are back in action next Saturday, Feb. 14, for a Valentine’s Day matinee against Rutgers, Cornell and Ursinus in Piscataway, N.J.
