COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Bubba Fairman notched a hat trick in his collegiate debut and goalkeeper Dan Morris made 11 saves to lead the No. 1 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to a 10-4 victory over Navy Saturday at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.

The Terps have won 25 straight season-openers dating back to 1994, and improved to 89-3-1 all-time in season-openers. Maryland has won nine straight games against Navy.

Despite a string of new faces – Logan Wisnauskas, Anthony DeMaio, Bubba Fairman, Jack Welding and Michael Adler each made their first collegiate starts – Maryland motored to a complete win on both ends of the field in rainy conditions.

Fifth-year senior Tim Rotanz, who owns the longest goal scoring streak for a midfielder in the nation at 15 games, opened the scoring for the Terps just 46 seconds into the game. Ethan Mintzer and Jared Bernhart followed with goals of their own to give the Terps a 3-0 lead.

Navy scored two goals at the end of the first quarter to draw within one goal, 3-2, but were held scoreless by the Maryland defense over the course of the next 25:23.

The Terps took advantage of the Mids’ offensive drought, scoring five unanswered goals during the timeframe to take an 8-2 advantage. Fairman nabbed his hat trick during the run, while Wisnauskas scored his first collegiate goal and Connor Kelly added a score.

Rotanz closed the game with a pair of goals and finished with a game-high four points.

Long stick midfielder Matt Neufeldt finished the game with a game-high five ground balls, while Nick Brozwoski tallied four of his own.
