COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- In a highly competitive match, the black team defeated the red team, 18-12, in Thursday’s Red-Black Wrestle-Offs.
The black team took an early advantage in the match, sweeping the three exhibition matches. Freshman Shawn Mosca was able to give the black team an early 11-0 lead after he won by technical fall.
Adam Whitesell then continued the red team’s comeback effort, winning 8-6 at 149 lbs. Freshman Kyle Cochran then kept pace with a 5-3 win at 157 lbs., and Brendan Burnham quickly made it four consecutive wins for black with a 6-3 win.
With the score 14-12 in favor of the black team heading into the final match, Spencer Woods was able to seal the win for the black team with a 13-4 win at 174 lbs.
“Tonight was a great experience for our team,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “We were able to wrestle in front of a great crowd and compete. We saw some great things from our young guys and our returners continued to improve. Now it’s time to get ourselves ready for Rutgers next week."
Maryland will begin its regular season with a conference match against Rutgers on Nov. 4. The match will be outdoors at High Point Solutions Stadium on the campus of Rutgers University.
