COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Led by junior heavyweight Youssif Hemida's 12th seed in the 285-pound bracket, the three Maryland wrestlers headed to the 2018 NCAA Championships received their opening round matchups following the NCAA's live selection show on Wednesday.
Hemida will battle unseeded Tyler Love of Virginia in his opening round match when the NCAA Championships begin on Mar. 15. Hemida wrestled well in last year's NCAA Championships, falling one point shy of All-American status. He also placed sixth in the Big Ten Championships.
149-pounder Alfred Bannister earned the 16th seed in his weight class and drew Wyoming's Sam Turner for his first round bout. Bannister placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships and also wrestled in the 2017 NCAA Championships last season.
Rounding out the trio of Maryland wrestlers heading to Cleveland is redshirt junior Ryan Diehl. The 2017 NCAA Qualifier is unseeded going into the 2018 championships, and enters the event following an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. He will wrestle eighth-seeded Nick Lee of Penn State in his first round.
