AKRON, Ohio – The Maryland wrestling team had several student-athletes in action earlier this month at for the UWW Cadet & University Nationals and World Team Trials. The events showcase some of the best young talent in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, as the Terps wrap up the bulk of their offseason competition.
Spencer Woods took home his second All-American honor of the summer at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House at the University of Akron, finishing seventh in the 80 kg bracket of University Nationals. The Kotzebue, Alaska native carved his way through the opening rounds of a deep 80 kg field, before dropping to Geordan Speiller in the quarterfinals.
He would finish with four wins total at the event, including a 14-6 win over Josh Anderson in the seventh place match. Woods previously earned All-America honors at the Junior Greco-Roman National Championships back in late April.

Redshirt freshman Josh Ugalde just finished outside of All-America contention in the 80 kg freestyle division, going 3-2 overall. Fellow redshirt freshman David-Brian Whisler also went 3-2, advancing to the round of 16 in the 97 kg bracket.
LINCOLN, Neb. – Sophomore Jaron Smith put together a big day on the mats for the Terps, winning three matches to capture second in the UWW Junior 84 kg division. Smith won his first two matches by fall, then a 10-0 win by technical superiority to advance to the final. There he met Nick Reenan of NC State, who won 12-2.
Sophomore Youssif Hemida won his opening round by tech in the 120 kg division 10-0, before being bounced into the consolation ladder.
