GREENSBORO, N.C. - Redshirt juniors Brooke Griffin and Abbey Clipp have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, league officials announced Tuesday.
Griffin led the Terps to a pair of wins, including a convincing 14-7 victory at No. 7 Penn State on Feb. 22. The Edgewater, Md., native totaled 14 points on 11 goals and three assists in the two wins to help keep Maryland undefeated. In Maryland’s 18-8 win over Boston University, Griffin posted four goals and two assists, while also pitching in on defense with a caused turnover and a ground ball. Griffin followed that performance with a career-high seven goals and an assist to lead the Terps to their first win of the season over a nationally-ranked foe.
Clipp put together the finest outing of her career against Penn State with a career-high 21 saves, including 12 in the first half, while helping the Maryland defense sustain a rare 36-31 shot deficit on the day. Clipp’s 21 saves were three shy of the Maryland single-game record held by Denise Wescott in 1977, and the most since Virginia’s Andrea Pfeiffer posted 22 against Princeton in the 2004 national championship game. The Ellicott City, Md., native record three saves in 30 minutes against Boston University.
Maryland faces Hofstra on the road Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before playing its first conference game of the year at No. 6 Duke Saturday.
