No. 6 Maryland 76, Wake Forest 49

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:
“I thought we played a really good second half. I was really pleased for the 20 minutes. I thought we played really hard. I thought we started a little sluggish first half, could have been a byproduct from the other night, but I thought we did a much better job once we were able to open it up late in the first half and kind of get our rhythm. I thought defensively and sharing the basketball and getting on the glass in the second half really improved.”

On 23 assists on 31 field goals:
“I thought our guard play really moved the ball, shared the ball. I thought we had a really nice inside-outside game. Alicia [DeVaughn] was really active for us, which we’ve got to be able to have.”

On second half rebounding:
“It was something that we were a little disappointed at in the first half. They were quicker to the glass with what we were doing. It’s just focusing in. We’re obviously a great rebounding team for a reason, so it was something that we just needed to focus in on a little more.”

On Maryland’s bench outscoring Wake Forest’s bench 45-14:
“I love that stat. We’re constantly saying any given night, be ready. And Chloe [Pavlech] showed that tonight. Our bench was fantastic. I felt like in the first half toward the last eight minutes you start seeing teams wear down, and we’re able to do that with our depth.”

On the team’s 17 threes in the last two games:
“The difference this year is how many consistent three-point shooters we have. Then when you take what AT’s (Alyssa Thomas) doing from the three-point line, it just continues to give us a lot of weapons. We have so many great three-point shooters and obviously led by Sharoti [Walker-Kimbrough]. She’s at a ridiculous rate at 50 percent with how she’s shooting the basketball. It’s a byproduct of how we’re sharing the basketball.”

On Shatori Walker-Kimbrough:
“It’s amazing to watch in terms of her productivity in minutes. You constantly look at her box and 15 points in 17 minutes, 10 points in 12 minutes. She’s so efficient with her time on the floor. The sky’s the limit. The only person who can stop Shatori is Shatori. And that’s pretty exciting as a player and her future and what lies ahead for her.”

Senior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On it being nice to get some rest while not playing as many minutes:
“Yes it was. I think we had a great team effort today. Everyone came and contributed, it made it really easy.”

On having any remorse about her double-double streak coming to an end:
“No not at all, I tried to focus on some defense today so I got better in that area.”

Freshman Guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough

On if she was confident their shots would eventually start to fall:
“Yes, I was definitely confident. My teammates were penetrating and finding me so I shot it with confidence.”

On her impressions of her first two ACC games:
“I have definitely seen a difference but the preparation has not been any different so I feel we’ve been prepared going into the games.”

Sophomore Guard Chloe Pavlech

On her performance tonight after not playing at North Carolina:
“I was really motivated for this game, Coach Frese always says to us that you’ll never know if it is going to be your night or when your number is going to be called or when it will be time for your opportunity so I was ready.”

Wake Forest Head Coach Jen Hoover

On tonight’s game:
“I think we really came out and competed and had some really good looks. They’re a top 10 program and you have to give them a lot of credit. They have a lot of weapons and I thought we did a really good job at moving the ball around. Coming in, we were able to give them some different looks and any time we can change it up defensively is a good thing. I thought we did a really good job controlling the glass in the first half and in the second half we sort of slowed down a bit. We have to go to the tape and see how to correct that. We have a young team with six freshmen and we will rely on our upper classmen to help lead our team to make them better and we got to keep pushing.”

On if Maryland’s size wore them down:
“With them being healthy, they bring a lot of different looks at you. Whether it’s toughness, whether its guarding a shooter, you can tell they have a lot of different pieces and they’re a very unselfish team. They play really well together. A thing they do really well is that they are very spacious. They do a great job of hitting their open players and they can exploit you when you make a mistake.”

On stopping Alyssa Thomas:
She’s by far one of the best players in the country and she brings a lot to the table for them. It’s not just the scoring, she creates for others. She picked up two fouls early in the first half and they were able to substitute other players for her because they had so much depth.

On Chelsea Douglas going 1-12:
“That’s definitely got to be a concern for us. After her game down in Florida these two both, Chelsea and Dearica both had great games in Florida. I think they both ended up averaging around 25 a game down there. We got back and Chelsea ended up with the flu for a couple of days and right now these two draw a lot of attention. A lot teams are watching film on just the two of them and right now other people got to step up. I think Ataijia Taylor played really well for us the other night, she’s capable. We’ve got other people that are capable of being able to score for us. Chelsea, she’s going to have to get some more open looks but people are running people at her and trapping her, and doing those kinds of things. We talked to both of them a lot about what they have to do but they have to bring their teammates along with them.”

Wake Forest Forward Dearica Hamby

On difference of play between first and second half:
“I think the zone made it a little bit more difficult for us to get the ball inside. They pretty much clogged the middle up.”
