Terps Have Strong Showing at WNC

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Five Terrapins are set to play in Women's National Championships semifinals Friday, with Moira Putsch, Alyssa Parker and Anna Dessoye all among the tournament's top scorers.

Ten current Terrapins and two former players are competing on eight teams in the WNC, which has taken place all week at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa.  The WNC serves as the selection trials for the U.S. Women's National Squad.

Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek, Anna Dessoye, Alyssa Parker, Kasey Tapman, Delaney Leathers, Shari Jones, Marissa Cutry, Moira Putsch and Melissa Flowe are the current Terrapins competing in the WNC. Terrapin alum and current national team member Ali McEvoy and Meredith Long, also a former Terp, are playing as well, while head coach Missy Meharg is coaching the USA White team.

Dessoye, Parker and Putsch are competing on the USA Under-21 Team and will face off against Kasey Tapman, Marissa Cutry and the USA Eagles team in the semifinals Friday at 11 a.m. Putsch has three goals, Parker has two and Dessoye has scored one in their three games this week.

Current U.S. National Team members Katie O’Donnell and Jill Witmer will not be playing after their recent time at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup. Fellow national team member Natalie Hunter will also not be playing due to an injury.

The Women’s National Championship held annually features the most elite athletes in the country, including top collegiate players, current National Team members and members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team. These athletes are placed on to eight teams, then face off in June for the prestigious title of national champion.
