COLLEGE PARK, Md. Freshman Tyler Goodwin notched a major decision win at 133 pounds, but Penn defeated the Maryland wrestling team, 19-13, at the Comcast Center Friday night.

The Terrapins (3-2, 0-0 ACC) and the Quakers went back in forth for most of a tightly contested affair. Frank Mattiace put the match away for Penn with a 12-4 major decision win over No. 10 Christian Boley.

“It’s little things that can easily be fixed,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “What it comes down to is when you’re out there, you’ve got to wrestle to win. All the guys have the tools, but they’ve got to go out and get it done. We’ll figure out what to do to get better.”

Penn struck first at 125 pounds when Caleb Richardson took a 10-5 decision over Billy Rappo in a hard fought bout. Goodwin got the Terps back on track, using two takedowns to roll to a dominant 9-0 win over Ken Bade.

At 141, Shyheim Brown continued his strong start to the season, defeating Jeff Canfora by decision. The sophomore is now 8-0 on the year

The Quakers answered the Terp victories with four wins of their own. Andrew Lenzi took out Frank Goodwin at 149 pounds before Ray Bethea edged Ben Dorsay at 157.

Danny Orem moved up to 165, but fell to Casey Kent, 6-0. In the 174-pound contest, Tony Gardner dropped his match to Brad Wukie, 6-3.

No. 2 Jimmy Sheptock pulled three points back for the Terps in a match of ranked competitors at  184 pounds. The senior started slow, but was able to reverse No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas and score a near fall to pull away for a 7-1 decision win.

Mattiace jumped all over Boley early, building up a solid lead by the third period. Boley scored a takedown late, but Mattiace secured the match and the dual for the Quakers.

No. 7 Spencer Myers made the final score 19-13, scoring a takedown over Steven Graziano in the sudden victory period to notch a 6-4 victory.

The Terps return to action on Sunday Dec.1 at the Grapple at the Garden in New York City. The Terps will take on Cornell and Rutgers at Madison Square Garden.
