COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland gymnastics team announced Wednesday that Nikola Chung, a member of the 2011 Australian world championship team, will be joining this year’s squad.

Chung, an international elite competitor, has won 26 individual medals as well as led her country to five top-three team finishes since 2010. That year, Chung captured three first-place finishes on the uneven bars and a first-place finish in the all-around competition at the National Club Championships in Canberra, Australia. The following year (2011), Chung was named a Senior International Competitor after finishing third on the balance beam at L’International Gymnix in Montreal, Canada.  Later that year, Chung was named to the 2011 world championship team, which competed in Toyko, Japan.

"We're very excited to welcome Nikola to the Gym Terp family,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “The team and staff have been eagerly awaiting her arrival all summer. She is a well-rounded gymnast excelling on vault and beam, and her bar routine is among the most difficult in the world. Nikola’s experience competing on the world stage will serve her well in the collegiate arena."

In 2012, Chung was in position to be named to the Australian Olympic team as she began the year with a second-place finish on the uneven bars at L’Internatioanl Gymnix.  She won five medals at the WA State Championships, including first-place finishes on vault, balance beam, uneven bars and the all-around competition in addition to a second-place finish in the floor exercise.

Upon arriving at the Australian Olympic Trials, Chung was a standout performer for the Australian team. She sustained an untimely ACL tear in her left knee during the vault warm-ups, which ultimately left her off the Australian Olympic Team.

Chung has been training all summer and has been cleared to compete.  Chung and the Terps will conduct a preseason bootcamp beginning Sunday, Sept. 8.
