On Thornton: Athletic and aggressive team player who makes the transition from defense to attack for 2002 … worked tenaciously to become a scorer in the non-traditional season … one of the team’s fastest and most powerful players … a recipient of a prestigious Banneker/Key scholarship at Maryland.

International Experience: Selected to U.S. Field Hockey’s A-Camp in August, 2001, after a B-Camp selection in July … Team Maryland and Futures member … played on Team Maryland at the National Field Hockey Festival in West Palm Beach, Fla., in the fall of 1999 … played on the Chesapeake Under-19 team at the National Futures tournament.

As a redshirt freshman in 2001: Saw game action in seven contests during her first season as part of the Terps’ backfield … contributed to a season-long defensive effort that held opponents to only 0.88 goals per game on 5.6 shots per game … also helped the Terrapins post 11 shutouts and sacrifice only 3.6 penalty corners per game … part of a defensive unit that allowed Kent State (Sept. 9) and Drexel (Oct. 28) zero shots and limited Virginia Commonwealth (Oct. 13), James Madison (Oct. 26) and Syracuse (Nov. 11) to only one shot … selected to the NFHCA national academic squad … one of 10 Terps listed on the 2001-02 ACC Honor Roll.

Before Maryland: Named to the NFHCA South Region All-America team following her senior season at St. Mary’s … all-state and All-Anne Arundel County first team selection by the Annapolis Capital and Baltimore Sun and named All-Met by the Washington Post … Anne-Arundel County Player of the Year by the Annapolis Capital in 1999 … named to the Maryland State High School Field Hockey Coaches Association All-State team in 1998 and 1999 … also an All-Anne Arundel County second-team selection in lacrosse by the Capital and the Sun.

Personal: Born January 20, 1982 … Courtney is the daughter of Velinda Ann McGowan … ranked fourth in her academic class with a 4.21 grade point average … a member of the National Honor Society … a Parvis Scholar, accorded only to four-year students at St. Mary’s who attain a 4.0 GPA or better throughout their high school career … a letters and sciences major.
