The first-ever Honda award recipient in the history of the Maryland field hockey program and the anchor of the vaunted Terrapin defense from 1998-2001, Autumn Welsh takes on a more involved role as the Terps' volunteer assistant coach in 2003. The two-time All-American, two-time ACC Tournament MVP and 2001 ACC Co-Player of the Year was an undergraduate assistant coach last season while student-teaching as part of her last semester at the university.

Welsh was a first team STX/NFHCA All-American in 2001, after being named to the second team in 2000. After captaining the top-rated defense in the nation in 2001 and keying the Terps to the national title game, Welsh added the Honda National Player of the Year Honor to a resume that included four Mid-Atlantic All-Region selections, a 2001 ACC Co-Player of the Year citation, two ACC Tournament MVP accolades, three All-ACC awards, two ACC Player of the Week nods and the 1998 ACC Rookie of the Year honor.

Welsh was standout player during one of the most successful eras of Terrapin field hockey, as her class posted a 73-14 four-year record, captured four straight ACC titles, played in three national semifinals and won the 1999 NCAA championship.

The Macungie, Pa., native joins women's lacrosse standout Jen Adams as the only Honda Award recipients in Maryland's storied history of women's athletics. Welsh still ranks in the Terrapin field hockey record books in career assists (7th) and single-season assists with 17 in 1999 (T-7th) and 16 in 2001 (T-10th).

Welsh began international field hockey play in the Olympic development program from the age of 15. In the spring of 2001, she was a member of the U.S. National Team that captured the Silver Medal at the Americas Cup. The two-time NFHCA Academic squad member and 2002 Verizon Academic District II selection graduated in 2002 with a double-degree in math/secondary education. She now is a full-time math teacher at Quince Orchard high school.
