#3 Maryland Rolls Past UMass, 4-1

AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 3 Maryland field hockey team (7-1, 1-0 ACC) rolled past Massachusetts, 4-1, Sunday afternoon behind goals from four underclassmen. Freshmen Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek, and sophomores Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer, all scored in the win.

Witmer put the Terrapins on the board 7:37 into the game off of a corner setup. Junior captain Megan Frazer notched the assist on the play. Just over a minute later, Gerzabek scored off of a pass in front of the goal from Witmer. Kate Heineman scored the Minutewomen's only goal in the 17th minute off of a corner. Maryland led 2-1 at the break.

Eight minutes into the second half, McEvoy scored off of a hard shot from the top of the circle. Fluharty added the Terps' fourth goal in the 53rd minute off of a shot from a sharp angle.

Maryland outshot Massacusetts (2-5) 26-8 and had 11 penalty corners to the Minutewomen's two.

Goalkeeper Natalie Hunter, junior Colleen Gulick and sophomore Hayley Turner each notched saves. Massachusetts keeper Alesha Widdall had 11 saves.

Up next, Maryland will play host to ACC opponent Wake Forest (1-6) Saturday at 1 p.m. Due to a 12:30 p.m. football game on campus, all fans will be charged $15 to park in the lots surrounding the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
