COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Terrapin field hockey team got back on track, cruising to a 5-0 win over Delaware on Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Five different Terps scored goals in the win and six seniors were honored for Senior Day prior to the start of the game.
Maryland (15-2) dominated on both sides of the ball. On offense, the Terps attempted a season-high 34 shots and drew 17 penalty corners, also a high. In the backfield, the defense limited the Blue Hens (6-9) to just two shots and one penalty corner.
Senior Meredith Long (Ocean City, N.J.), who was playing in the final regular-season home game of her career, knocked in what would eventually be the game winner less than seven minutes into the game.
After an extended quiet period, Maryland got on the board again with a goal from senior Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.), who was also playing in her final regular-season home game, on a scramble in front of the net, to make the score 2-0 at the break.
Freshman Susie Rowe (London, England) put the Terps ahead, 3-0, at 43:56, and senior Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md.), who was one of six Terps honored for Senior Day, knocked in a penalty corner goal for the four-goal lead.
In the 63rd minute, freshman Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa.) found redshirt freshman Kim Ziegler (Kingsville, Md.) in the circle and Ziegler tapped in the first goal of her career and the team's final tally of the afternoon.
In the 52nd minute, Delaware had an opporunity to break into the scoring column, but junior defender Kristina Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.) had a dive at the goal line to protect the shutout and turned away one of two Blue Hen shots in the period.
Delaware goalkeeper Megan Allen was peppered with 34 Maryland shots, but made 18 saves in 54 minutes. Terrapin keeper Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) posted her fourth shutout of the season.
Maryland is back in action for its final ACC regular-season game of the season when it travels to North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
