COLLEGE PARK, Md. - All-American Paula Infante scored back-to-back goals to lift Maryland to a 4-2 come-from-behind win over California on the first day of the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Coming into the game, Maryland owned a 16-0 record at the Terrapin Invitational record while also riding a five-game win streak after a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at Old Dominion last weekend.

Early on, it seemed as if both of Maryland's streaks would not be threatened when senior Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) deflected senior Tiffany Marsh's pass (Marathon, N.Y.) after a penalty corner into the far-left side of the cage just 4:01 into the game. However, the Bears (3-4) responded.

Cal's Valentina Godfrid, who attempted all six of the team's shots, evened the score with a shot from the right side almost four minutes later. In the 29th minute, she put California in front, 2-1, with a back-handed shot from the top of the circle.

Trailing at the half for only the second time this season, Maryland was awarded a penalty corner and senior captain Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md.) knocked in her second goal of the season, evening the score again, 2-2, at 43:30. Marsh and sophomore Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) both had assists.

A minute later, Infante (Santiago, Chile) intercepted a ball on the Terps' defensive end, ran down field, past two defenders into the circle and scored, giving the Terps the lead for the first time, 3-2.

Maryland padded its lead, when a penalty shot was called against the Bears at 57:31 and Infante converted on the opportunity to seal the victory.

The Bears would not go away and tried to narrow the lead, earning three-consecutive penalty corners. But Maryland goalkeeper Christina Restivo (Parkton, Md.) made saves on each shot attempt to keep the Bears in check.

In the second game of the Terrapin Invitational, American defeated Stanford, 1-0. In an evenly matched game, AU's Irene Schikhardt tallied the game's only goal.

The Terrapin Invitational continues tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 11 with the Eagles playing California at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park. The Terps look to win its 18th-straight Terrapin Invitational game when they close out the tournament versus Stanford at approximately 3 p.m.
