COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 3 Maryland field hockey team (4-1) shut out Northwestern, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Terrapin Invitational for its 98th win at the Field Hockey & Complex.
Witmer put the Terrapins on the board with a goal in the seventh minute of the game. Junior Nikki Fernandez sent a quick pass to her just in front of the goal to set it up.
Gerzabek doubled the score with a goal in the 30th minute. Junior Harriet Tibble brought it into the circle and sent it up towards the goal. Gerzabek deflected it in for the score.
On the Terps' 10th penalty corner of the game, Fluharty scored her first career goal with a deflected shot in the 60th minute of play.
Maryland took 10 penalty corners to Northwestern's four. The Terps outshot the Wildcats 20-six.
With the victory, the Terps are 98-9 (.916) all-time at the Complex and they extended their home win streak to 34 straight games.
In Sunday's action, No. 8 American will play Northwestern at noon and the Terrapins will close the tournament with a game vs. Villanova at 2 p.m.
