Maryland Field Hockey Stomps Stanford, 8-1

Oct. 6, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Six different Terrapins found the back of the net, including a pair of goals each from juniors Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad (10-1, 1-1 ACC) rolled over unranked Stanford, 8-1, at a breezy Artificial Turf Facility. Maryland enjoyed its largest victory since an 11-2 drubbing of Radford on Sept. 17, outshooting the Cardinal 27-8. Terp senior tri-captain Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) keyed the Terps' offensive attack, dishing out a career-high three assists.

Maryland's first strike came at the 27:04 mark when Walter one-timed a Smith cross for a score. Senior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) then slapped a 10-yarder off a defender and into the net at 24:49. The Cardinal (5-7, 3-2 NorPac) cut the lead to 2-1 with their lone score, an unassisted goal by sophomore Amrit Chima. Junior back Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) put the Terps up by two again at 15:39, netting her second penalty stroke of the year. It was senior tri-captain Molly Kauffman's (West Lawn, Pa.) turn next, tipping in her first goal of 2000 after a scramble in front of the cage. The Terps had a 4-1 halftime lead.

The second half was all Terrapins, who enjoyed a 15-1 period shot advantage. Walter scored her second goal of the game on a penalty corner at 26:26, with Hiskins on the push and senior tri-captain Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) making the stick stop. Rizzo then reeled off two consecutive goals, both diving one-timers from Smith at 24:31 and 20:41, respectively. Sophomore Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) capped the evening with a fast break goal, with Walter assisting on the goal after a long pass from Tagliente.

Terp junior keeper Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) split time with newcomer Erica Bicksler (Palmyra Pa.), with the starter making five stops. Stanford's Rebecca Shapiro and Emily Zander combined for 11.

Maryland hosts the Terrapin Doubleheader on Sunday, which opens when it meets ACC rival Duke at 1 p.m. The Cardinal remain in College Park this weekend to take on American University at 3 p.m.
