Maryland, Boston U. Victorious On Day One Of Field Hockey Invite

Sept. 13, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland Terrapins (5-0, 0-0 ACC) and Boston University Terriers (3-2, 0-0 AMERICA EAST) were both victorious on the opening day of the 2002 Terrapin Field Hockey Invitational, presented by YOLO Sportswear. In the opening game, the Terriers used a penalty stroke and solid corner defense to hold off the American Eagles, 2-1, before the Terrapins put together a solid team effort to handle UMass, 4-0.

Junior Dalinda Banuelos' penalty stroke beat American goalkeeper Laura Miller in the lower left corner of the cage at 31:54 in the first half to give Boston a lead it would not relinquish. A Caitlyn Cassara field goal in the opening minutes of the second period was all the insurance the Terriers would need, even after American's (3-2, 0-0 Patriot) three-time all-region forward, Magdalena Aguilar, took a pass off a penalty corner opportunity down the right side of the cage and buried it. The Terriers held on for the 2-0 victory.

In the late game, the top-ranked Terps went 17-deep on their bench and put together a 27-1 shot advantage to post a 4-0 victory over Massachusetts (0-4, 0-0 Atlantic 10). Sophomore goalie Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) posted her third straight shutout and senior All-American Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season.

Play continues on Sunday at the Terrapin Invitational when UMass and American clash at 11 a.m. and the Terps battle Boston University at 2 p.m. Admission to the Terps' Artificial Turf facility is free.
