CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 1-ranked Maryland field hockey team won its ACC opener Saturday afternoon against No. 9 Boston College, 6-2. The Terrapins moved to 8-0 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.

Senior Nicole Muracco, the reigning ACC Player of the Week, and junior Katie O'Donnell each scored two goals in the game. Senior Emma Thomas and freshman Janessa Pope added one goal apiece.

"BC is a very, very strong team. In the first half, we definitely struggled with the level of intensity in a good way. It was a very positive experience for us. They definitely brought us to a new level of what the ACC's going to be about," head coach Missy Meharg said.

Muracco and O'Donnell teamed up for the first goal around 15 minutes into the game with Muracco scoring and O'Donnell notching the assist. O'Donnell scored two minutes later from Pope. Boston College's Chelsey Feole scored off a penalty stroke next. Thomas added her goal with just five minutes left in half with the assist coming from senior Alexis Pappas. The Terps went into the half with a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles found the goal first in the second half when Jessica Roberts scored from Feole. Pope added her unassisted goal 15 minutes later Muracco scored again, this time from Pappas, with just over two minutes left in the half and O'Donnell added one more unassisted goal in the final minute.

"Janessa Pope really had a great game. She had the wide-open assist to Nicole and then put us ahead 4-2, which really gave us confidence," Meharg said. "We were pleased to be able to pull away at the end. We were able to execute a couple different systems and combinations. Thankfully, we've really grown in a positive way."

Senior goalkeeper Alicia Grater had five saves on the day. The Terrapins outshot the Eagles 14-9 on the day.

The Lady Terps will return home this weekend to face California at home in College Park Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. Any fans attending Monday's game will be able to park in lot 4i, the lot directly adjacent to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
