CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In the battle of the unbeatens, No. 1 North Carolina prevailed over the No. 2 Maryland field hockey team, 3-0. The loss also snapped a 20-game Terrapin win streak, which dated back to the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. All-American goalkeeper Kathryn Masson made nine saves in the loss.
Both teams entered the game with a 16-0 record and were looking to clinch the ACC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Neither team relented, as the score remained scoreless until the 56th minute of the game. North Carolina made several threats, attempting 23 total shots for the game, 14 coming in the first half. But Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) kept the Tar Heels at bay, turning away six shots in the opening period.
The battle continued well into the second half until UNC's Alli Tanner's shot form the left side made its way passed Masson, breaking the stalemate. About 12 minutes later, Katelyn Falgowski added a second tally to make the score 2-0. Jesse Gey then sealed the win with North Carolina's third goal with just under two minutes remaining in the game.
While Maryland's defense, which is ranked in the top five in the nation, did a solid job of keeping the No. 1 offense in the nation off the board for nearly 56 minutes, the UNC defense, also ranked in the top five, shutout the Terps in the category of shots and penalty corners. The Terps also kept the Heels from converting on any of their 10 penalty corners.
Maryland returns to action on Friday, Oct. 26 for its final regular season game, hosting Villanova. Prior to the start of the contest, the Terrapin seniors will be honored for Senior Night. Admission and parking to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex is free.
