COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Top-ranked Maryland field hockey held off a persistent Temple squad, 2-1, on the first day of the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. It was the first meeting between the teams since 1998. In the second game, American topped Northwestern, 3-2.
The scoreboard read a one-goal affair, but the Terps (5-0) gave the Owls (3-2) few opportunities during the match. Maryland outshot Temple, 23-1, but the lone shot for Temple was a crucial one.
In the 15th minute, a melee in the Terps' defensive circle was all the Owls needed to give Maryland its first deficit of the year. Mandi Ruth took control of the ball and passed off to teammate Charise Young, giving Temple a 1-0 lead.
The Terps had not trailed in any of its first four games of the season until this point and Temple held on to its lead with the play of goalkeeper Erin Hanshue, who finished with 12 saves. But before the break, Maryland broke through. Freshman Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J.) equalized the contest with a backhanded shot.
The second half was more of the same. Maryland continued to pepper Hanshue with 10 shots, but it was not until the 50th minute when junior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) knocked in a rebound to score the go-ahead goal.
Maryland had six penalty corners in each half to end with 12, while the Owls were blanked in the category.
In the second match, American took a 2-0 lead within the first 16 minutes, but Northwestern cut the lead to 2-1 in the 25th minute on a goal by Cassie Miller. AU's Heidie Hershberger pushed her team's advantage back up to two, 3-1, in the 26th minute.
The goal would eventually stand, despite the Eagles being blanked in the second stanza. NU's Elizabeth Dobb's brought the Wildcats to within, 3-2, and drew a penalty corner in the final minute. But the American defense shutdown Northwestern's chances for overtime.
The Terrapin Invitational continues on Sunday, Sept. 10. The Terps host Northwestern in the first game at 1 p.m., followed by American and Temple at 3 p.m. Admission and parking is free.
