AMHERST, Mass. - The Terp field hockey team cruised to its second-straight victory of the season, defeating Massachusetts, 7-0, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Garber Field in Amherst, Mass. Junior Anja Boettcher (Ingolstadt, Germany) recorded her first-career hat trick, while Maryland registers its second-straight shutout.
Continuing what it had started in the 8-0 season opener against New Hampshire on Saturday, Maryland (2-0) poured on the offense early, taking a 2-0 lead within the first four minutes of the game. Junior Anja Boettcher (Ingolstadt, Germany) tallied back-to-back goals to open the match.
After the first two quick tallies, the game went scoreless for 27 minutes until freshman Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) ended that streak with an unassisted goal.
Before the first-half horn went off, junior co-captain Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) knocked one into the back of the cage on a penalty corner, making the score 4-0.
Ten minutes into the second half, Boettcher knocked in her third goal of the match, extending the lead to an insurmountable 5-0. Sophomore Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) broke out for a career-high two goals in less than a minute, putting UM ahead, 7-0.
Maryland dominated both ends of the field, once again, allowing just two UMass (1-1) shots for the game and none in the first half. The Minutewomen were also limited to just one penalty corner for the game.
Maryland closes out its three-game road trip to Amherst, Mass., on Tues., Sept. 2 when the Terps play Quinnipiac at 11 a.m. in Garber Field.
