COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A total team effort on Senior Day at the Artificial Turf Facility helped the No. 3 Maryland field hockey squad (15-3, 2-2 ACC) to a 7-0 victory over the visiting Richmond Spiders (7-12, 1-4 CAA). A determined Terp offense, paced by senior All-American Rachel Hiskins' (Victoria, Australia) two goals and two assists, complemented stellar defense and excellent goaltending to outshoot the Spiders 33-5 and record the team's eighth season shutout. The seven goal final was Maryland's largest margin of victory since an 8-1 drubbing of Stanford on Oct. 6.

Moments after the 2000 seniors, parents and athletics director Deborah A. Yow and assistant athletics director Jane Mullens were introduced as part of a senior salute, junior forward Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) one-timed a Hiskins pass to put Maryland on the scoreboard at 29:59. Junior All-American Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) rocketed the Terps to a 2-0 lead with a slapshot at 15:11, while consecutive scores by Hiskins at 13:32 and 10:55 put the Terps up 4-0. Junior back Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) rifled in a penalty corner from Hiskins and senior All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) at 4:39 to make it 5-0. Tagliente broke away and banged in a goal with 4:03 remaining to give the Terrapins a 6-0 advantage - their largest halftime lead of the 2000 season - while the suffocating Maryland defense held the Spiders to one first-half shot.

The second period featured more Terp offense and another score from Rizzo. The junior, who netted the match's first goal, closed out the scoring with 27:39 to play in the second half.

Terp junior goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) played the first half perfectly to collect her eighth season shutout. Keepers Jackie Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.), Erica Bicksler (Palmyra, Pa.) and kicking back Carli Harris (Westminster, Md.) preserved the blanking in the second stanza. Bicksler saved one while Richmond's Brooke Fuller stopped six.

The Terps are next in action as the 2000 ACC Field Hockey Championships come to College Park, Nov. 2-5. Seedings will be officially announced tomorrow, and game times, notes and other information are available on the field hockey page found at www.theacc.fansonly.com.
