COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Sophomore Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) and junior Anja Boettcher (Ingolstadt, Germany) each tallied a pair of goals to lead the No. 3 Terrapin field hockey team to a 6-0 blanking of Drexel on Tuesday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The win marks the sixth shutout of the season for Maryland as it extends its win steak to seven games.
Maryland (7-0) took control of the game early taking a 2-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game. Sophomore Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) knocked in her first-career goal, which would turn out to be the game winner, in the sixth minute of the game. Boettcher gave the Terps a 2-0 cushion converting on the early penalty corner in the ninth minute.
Ciconte charged forward, scoring back-to-back goals 27 seconds apart in the 27th minute to put Maryland out in front at halftime, 4-0.
After the break, freshman Brooke Johnson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) connected with Boettcher on the give-and-go as Boettcher tacked on Maryland's fifth goal of the game. The assist was Johnson's first point of her career.
The sixth Maryland goal came on a penalty stroke in the 64th minute. Johnson caught the left side of the cage to notch her first-career goal.
Drexel's (1-4) only real threat was with less than 19 minutes left in the game. The Dragons lured Maryland goalkeeper Christina Restivo (Hereford, Md.) out of position on the fastbreak, however, the Terp defense recovered and quickly ended the threat.
Restivo recorded a save as she and sophomore Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) combined for the shutout. Drexel keeper Katie Dougherty posted five saves in the loss.
Maryland had a 21-4 shot advantage and had eight penalty corners to Drexel's three.
The next four of five games for the Terps are against ranked opponents. Maryland hosts No. 7 Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 12 p.m. The game was rescheduled from Friday, Sept. 19 because of expected bad weather due to Hurricane Isabel.
