Field Hockey Moves To 2-0 With 4-1 Win Over New Hampshire

Sept. 2, 2002

CHICAGO - The Maryland field hockey team (2-0) wrapped up their season-opening trip to Chicago in fine fashion, defeating New Hampshire 4-1 at Lakeside Field on the campus of Northwestern University on Sunday. After sacrificing an early goal to the Wildcats in the game's opening moments, the Terps responded by executing on set pieces to shore up their second win in two days and open their new season on the right foot.

The Wildcats broke open the scoring less than four minutes into the game when Jen Stamp and Kristen Weldon connected with Marcie Boyer on a direct corner goal. The New Hampshire lead did not last long, however, as sophomore Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) netted the first of her two scores - this one on an assist from senior Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) - in the ninth minute. Barbieri's direct corner goal from Simon and junior Katrin Rummer (Karlsruhe, Germany) put the Terps ahead for good in the 25th minute. Barbieri, who was named the 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year after a tremendous freshman campaign, has been credited with game-winning goals in the Terps' first two games.

Senior All-American Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) got in on the act in the second half, notching a pair of corner goals. The first was on an international connection from Rummer and senior Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) with just under 10 minutes to play, and her second score came from Simon and Barbieri in the contest's final minute. Barbieri's assist marks her ninth point scored in two games.

For the Terps in goal, sophomore Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) posted her second complete-game victory, making one save in the process. Wildcat keeper Christine Buckley stopped 11 Terp shots.

The Terrapins' next contest is at home against Drexel on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Admission to all Terrapin home games is free.
