AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Caroline Walter scored three goals and junior Keli Smith scored the game-winning goal with 16:55 remaining in the first-half to lead the No. 1 ranked University of Maryland field hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Boston University at Garber Field here tonight.
Maryland improved to 3-1 while Boston University fell to 2-1. The Terps are currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by Sports Illustrated for Women.
Walter scored the first two goals of the game for the Terps before B.U. stormed back with three goals in a six-minute span to take a 3-2 lead with 19:15 remaining in the first half. Walter scored just under one minute later to tie the score at three. Smith then scored what proved to be the game-winner on a penalty corner situation with 16:55 remaining in the first half.
Junior Carla Tagliente recorded two assists to bring her career point total to 90. She needs only one point to move into a tie for eighth place on Maryland's career scoring list with Lynn Frame (1979-82) and Lisa Rowe (1989-92). Frame and Rowe totaled 91 points each during their careers.
The Terps controlled play in the second half, holding a 10-3 shot advantage over the Terriers. Senior goalie Zoe Ehrlich recorded one save as she played the first half while sophomore Ashley Hohnstine recorded three saves in her first career appearance for the Terps. Goalies Noreen Flanagan (four) and Susan Harrington (five) totaled nine saves for the B.U.
