COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior All-American Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) ended a double-overtime battle in style, rifling in the game-winning goal to lead the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins in a 5-4 victory over the No. 3 Old Dominion Monarchs Sunday afternoon. Hiskins' three goals on the day helped the Terps to come back, and then step up in the second extra session to defeat ODU before a crowd of 324 at the Artificial Turf Facility. The senior's three-goal day marks her second hat trick in two games, as Hiskins netted four in Maryland's devastation of Ohio on Aug. 28.

Old Dominion raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. The Monarchs first struck at 26:14, when senior All-American Marina DiGiacomo scored on a penalty corner. ODU extended its lead when DiGiacomo set up freshman Angie Loy for a one-timer at 16:44. The Terps began their comeback as Hiskins blasted a rebound after a Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) shot was redirected off the pipe at 9:05. Hiskins knotted the game at two at 6:17, scoring on a Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) cross.

The Terps came out firing in the second half, as Walter drove along the baseline and found sophomore Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) for a score less than four minutes after the break. Tagliente put the Terps up by two at 24:31, breaking down ODU's defense and finding the back of the net. The Monarchs, however, would not go quietly, cutting Maryland's lead as DiGiacomo netted another penalty corner. The senior again found the cage with 37.8 seconds remaining, launching a shot from just inside the circle.

After a scoreless first overtime period in which only seven players (six plus a keeper) are allowed to take the field for each team, the Terps broke the stalemate. Less than two minutes into the second OT stanza, the ball came loose in front of the cage where it was captured by Hiskins. The senior, who leads the Terps in scoring with eight goals and two assists for 18 points, wheeled and ripped a shot through ODU keeper Marybeth Freeman for the decisive score.

Freeman finished the game with 10 saves, while Maryland junior Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) stopped three Monarch attempts in impressive performances by both.

The Terrapins next hit the road for their first away match of the season. Maryland travels to Delaware to take on the Fightin' Blue Hens on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
