COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team, ranked No. 2 in the latest Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, shut out No. 20 Massachusetts 3-0 Sunday afternoon. The Terrapins (7-0, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first half before adding two goals in the second for their third shutout of the year.

"When Maryland really decided to play and turn it on, we were very much in control of the game," head coach Missy Meharg said. "I am very pleased with the outcome. I thought we started strong and passed well."

The Terps' defense allowed the Minutewomen just four shots in the game, including one in the second half. Making her fifth start of the year, redshirt junior goalkeeper Melissa Vassalotti recorded her first career shutout. She had three saves on the day.

Junior Jemma Buckley put the Terps ahead in the 19th minute of the game, when she scored on a penalty corner. Freshman Ali McEvoy had the assist.

Maryland scored its second goal with 18 minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore Megan Frazer scored on a corner, with senior Katie O'Donnell inserting on the play and junior Lauren Barr stopping. O'Donnell finalized the score at 3-0 when she scored with 10 minutes left in the game on a pass from freshman Jill Witmer across in front of the goal.

The Terps took 12 shots in the game and had nine penalty corners to Massachusetts' three. Minutewomen goalkeeper Alesha Widdell had four saves in the game, all coming in the first half.

Maryland will head to No. 7 Wake Forest Saturday to continue its Atlantic Coast Conference slate. The Terps and the Demon Deacons will take the field at 1 p.m in Winston-Salem, N.C.

NOTE: Senior Katie O'Donnell was recognizer prior to Sunday's game for breaking the ACC's career points record in Saturday's game with her 231st career point. She is also the ACC's career assist leader.
