CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Second-ranked Maryland field hockey posted its third-straight shutout, defeating Harvard, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Jordan Field. Senior Jackie Ciconte scored the game's only goal.
The Terrapin defense has allowed just four shots to its opponents in the last three games, dating back to its 6-0 win over Stanford on Sept. 11. The Crimson, who had not given up a goal on the season entering the game, was limited to just one shot and had no penalty corners.
Maryland's goal came with 11 minutes into the game. Senior Meredith Long (Ocean City, N.J.) sprinted down the right sideline on the counterattack. She passed the ball ahead to a sprinting Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa.), and Scholl made a pass across the net to an oncoming Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) who dove forward for the defelection into the open cage.
The Terps remain undefeated, winning their ninth game in a row, despite being held to its lowest scoring output of the season. Harvard fell to 4-1 on the year.
Maryland will host Ivy League opponent Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
