No. 1 Terps Defeat American, 6-0, in Field Hockey

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Rachel Hiskins scored one goal and added three assists and freshman Carissa Messimer scored two goals to lead No. 1 Maryland to a 6-0 victory over American at the Artificial Turf Field here tonight. The Terps outshot the Eagles 23-0 in gaining their second consecutive shutout victory.

The Terps improved their record to 2-0 while the Eagles lost their season opener and are 0-1. Maryland is ranked No. 1 by Sports Illustrated for Women.

The Eagles held the Terps scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the game until redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman found the back of the cage for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Messmier helped the Terps take a 3-0 halftime lead with two first-half goals. Her first career goal came with 4:45 remaining in the half and gave the Terps a 2-0 advantage. She scored her second goal of the night after time had expired in the first half as a penalty was called on the Eagle defense. The two goals were the first two of Messimer's collegiate career.

Maryland received second half goals from Hiskins, sophomore Caroline Walter and junior All-American Keli Smith. All-America Carla Tagliente added an assist in the Terps' final goal to bring her career point total to 86 and move her into a tie for 10th place on Maryland's all-time scoring list. She is now tied with Cheryl Rudio (1985-88) who recorded 86 points during her four-year varsity career.

Maryland senior goalie Zoe Ehrlich did not need to make a save in gaining her second career complete game shutout. American's Lauren McDonnell played well in recording 11 saves.

Maryland travels to play No. 2 Old Dominion Saturday on Norfolk, Va.
