NORFOLK, Va. - The Maryland field hockey team (2-1) fell at No. 12 Old Dominion, 4-0, Friday evening. The loss ended the Terrapins' 12-game win streak over the Lady Monarchs (3-0).
"Old Dominion is a very strong team, tactically and technically. They've grown in a year," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Maryland struggled to utilize a passing game first."
Old Dominion took the early lead less than three minutes into the game when Emma Batten scored off of a pass from Maartje van Rijswijk. She scored again at 23:07 to give ODU a 2-0 lead, which it held at the break.
Batten added her third goal with 23:45 remaining in the second half. She scored off of a pass from Kati Nearhouse. Old Dominion added its fourth goal off its lone penalty corner of the game. Stephanie Kratzer scored after Rebecca Condie and Kelsey Smither assisted on the play.
The Terrapins took 10 shots in the game, while the Monarchs took 11. The Terps drew five penalty corners and the Monarchs had one.
Redshirt goalkeeper Melissa Vassalotti notched five saves, while Old Dominion keeper Devon Siefert had four.
The Monarchs and the Terrapins own the most NCAA titles between them - Old Dominion with nine and Maryland with seven. Old Dominion is the only team the Terps will face twice in the regular season this year. The Monarchs will come to College Park for a 6 p.m. game on Oct. 14.
"There's a lot to take from this game," Meharg said. "We look forward to seeing Old Dominion in College Park."
The Terrapins, who are ranked No. 1 in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason poll, will play host to No. 9 Michigan (1-1) Sunday in their home opener at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission and parking are both free.
