COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three different Terrapins found the back of the net as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad (10-1, 0-1 ACC) defeated their second-straight NFHCA top 20 opponent. Freshman Jackie Ciconte's (Wilmington, Del.) first career goal proved to be the game-winner in the second half as the Terps buried the No. 14 California Golden Bears (6-3, 0-0 NorPac) under 31 shots for a 3-1 victory.

The Terrapins rattled off 11 shots in the first half, but were only able to make one of them count. After a direct penalty corner shot by sophomore Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) was stopped by Cal keeper Kelly Knapp, senior Izzy Palmer (Malvern, England) raced to the ball and flipped it over the outstretched goaltender. After several near-misses by the goal cage the Terps took a tenuous 1-0 lead into the halftime huddle.

"I think in the first half of the game, we didn't play so intelligently, but the second half was great," said Maryland's four-time national coach of the year Missy Meharg. "We opened it up, we played good hockey and everyone played with a lot of fortitude."

The Terps applied aggressive offensive pressure in the second stanza and finally broke through on Ciconte's first collegiate score in the 49th minute. Senior Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) ripped a shot into the pads of Knapp, and Terrapin rookie Ciconte was there to finish off the flurry.

Maryland scored its third goal of the game only two minutes later. Capitalizing on one of 11 second-half penalty corner opportunities, sophomore Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) found Honda hopeful Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) on the left post, where she punched it in. Cal's lone score of the game came on a direct corner opportunity in the 57th minute, where junior Nora Fedderson connected on a straight shot.

The top-ranked Terrapins have now won three straight games after dropping their first game of the season to No. 3 Wake Forest in overtime. Maryland now owns a 4-1 record against the top 20 and is in action next at No. 18 Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
