COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In her first game back since playing with the U.S. Junior National Team, senior Lauren Powley scored Maryland's first two goals in a 4-1 victory over ACC-foe Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The second-ranked Terps improved to 11-1 and 2-1 in the ACC, while UVA fell to 6-5 and 0-2 in the conference.
Competing in a Terrapin uniform for the first time since September 10, Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) gave the Terps a 2-0 lead, scoring both goals off penalty corners at the 16th and 18th minutes. Powley had spent the last two weeks in Santiago, Chile, helping the United States Junior National Team to a best-ever seventh-place finish at the Junior World Cup.
The Cavs cut into the lead at 19:25 with a goal from Lindsay O'Bannon, but senior Jackie Ciconte's (Wilmington, Del.) goal a minute and a half later gave Maryland a two-goal cushion.
In the closing minute, the Terps were awarded two of their 11 penalty corners of the game. On a scramble after the shot on the second corner, senior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) found classmate Meredith Long (Ocean City, N.J.) in front of the net and Long knocked in the ball with no time remaining for Maryland's fourth goal of the game.
The Terrapin defense was solid, once again, allowing just four Cavalier shots. Maryland, on the other hand, peppered UVA goalie Katherine Blair with 17 shot attempts.
Maryland is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 2, hosting Rutgers to close out a four-game home stretch. Admission and parking for the game are free.
