COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Top-seeded and top-ranked Maryland advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after a 4-0 victory over No. 19 Richmond in the first round on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Junior Emily Trycinski scored twice in the second half to seal the win for the Terps. Maryland will face No. 6 American on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.

With the win, ACC Champion Maryland records its fifth 20-win season in program history and the third in the last five years.

Senior Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) put the Terps ahead early on, scoring a back-handed shot just over one minute into the game. The Spiders (16-6), who earned an NCAA Tournament bid after winning their play-in game against Sacred Heart, were able to keep the Terps quiet until senior All-ACC performer Lauren Powley was in front of the cage to knock in a rebound at 27:03.

Maryland had only six shots in the first half, but exploded for 12 in the second period, dominating the tempo of the game. In the 53rd minute, sophomore Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) connected with Trycinski (Nazareth, Pa.) on the break, making a solid pass across the net. Trycinski finished off the play with the goal to make the score, 3-0. Trycinski capped the scoring with her second of the game, a career high, in the 62nd minute.

The Terrapins kept Richmond to just three shots on the game and one penalty corner. Maryland, on the other hand, had 18 shots and five corners. Spiders' goalie Michelle Swartz had 11 saves.

The Terps host American in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament second round game when they eliminated the Eagles, 2-0, to move on to the tournament semifinals for the second year in a row. The teams also met in the final game of the 2005 regular season in Washington, D.C., with the Terps winning that contest, 2-1. American defeated Penn State in its first-round contest, 3-2, to advance.

Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on the campus of the University of Maryland. Tickets can be purchased at the facility's ticket window which opens one hour prior to game time.
