COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (1-0) and senior captain Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) opened the 2000 field hockey season with a bang at the Artificial Turf Facility, exploding offensively for a 9-1 victory over Connecticut. In a match-up of the reigning national champion Terps and semifinalist Huskies (0-1), Maryland's barrage featured a 33-9 shot advantage and a three-goal performance by All-American Tagliente. The margin of victory was the Terps' largest since a 13-1 rout of Georgetown on Sept. 18, 1999, and also the largest defeat ever suffered by UConn.
After nearly 22 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Terps got on the board when Tagliente punched in a goal from a pass by junior Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany). It was Walter's turn next at the 9:05 mark in the first half, as senior captain Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) set her up for the score. The Terps increased their lead to 4-0 by halftime on unassisted goals by sophomores Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.).
The Terps picked up where they started in the second half, as Messimer netted her second tally of the game on a penalty corner at 33:20. After senior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) set up junior Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) for a goal, UConn cracked the scoreboard at 29:40 when senior All-American Laura Klein chipped in a rebound. Eleven seconds later Tagliente answered, rifling a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from senior All-American Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.). Tagliente and Hiskins created opportunities for scores later in the half, making the final 9-1.
The Maryland-UConn contest the first in a three-game hockey series at the University of Maryland. The Huskies face Ohio University on Sun., Aug. 27 at 1 p.m., and the Terps are back in action on Mon., Aug. 28 vs. Ohio. Both games are at the Artificial Turf Facility on Maryland's campus.
