Field Hockey Opens Season with Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior forward Kasey Heiser (Schaefferstown, Pa.) scored two goals and added an assist and sophomore forward Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) also scored twice, leading sixth-ranked Maryland (1-0) to a 8-0 victory over Richmond (0-1) tonight at the Astro Turf Facility.

The Terps scored three goals in a span of 7:27 to take a 3-0 halftime led and then erupted for five goals in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored a goal and tallied two assists, sophomore back Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) scored once and assisted once and freshman midfielder Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) assisted on three goals.

Also scoring a goal for Maryland were senior back Jen Pratt (Greene, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.). Freshman back Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) had an assist and a defensive save.

In goal, the Terps got a shared shutout from sophomores Angela Platt (Coleraine, Northern Ireland) and Zoe Ehrlich (Morristown, N.J.). Platt played the first half and had one save while Ehrlich played the second half and had a career-high eight saves.

Maryland travels to St. Louis this weekend for the first-ever ACC-Big Ten Challenge. On Saturday, the Terps take on No. 11 Michigan at 3 p.m. and on Monday they face Michigan State at 2 p.m.
