COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Delaney Leathers was named a Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Scholar of Distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association this week. She earned the honor for carrying a GPA better than 3.9 in the 2013 fall semester.

Leathers, a cell biology major, is one of just 80 players in the country named to the Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction list.

The Virginia Beach, Va. native started in 11 of the Terrapin’s 24 games in the midfield and helping out the defensive unit. She helped Maryland to a 22-2 record and the Final Four, as well as the ACC championship in a 2-0 win over North Carolina.

Leathers was also named to's All-Rookie Squad and picked up a goal and an assist on the year.

Leathers, along with Katie Gerzabek, Christine Knauss, Alyssa Parker, Steffi Schneid and Shelby Sydnor were all named to the NFHCA’s National Academic Squad earlier this week.

The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.

The Terrapins went 22-2 in the 2013 season, winning the program’s 10th ACC title with a 2-0 victory over North Carolina in Boston. Maryland advanced to its 17th Final Four and 16th under head coach Missy Meharg.
