GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior forward Jill Witmer of the top-ranked Maryland field hockey team was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week Tuesday for her two-goal performance in the Terps’ come-from-behind, 2-1, win in overtime at No. 3 North Carolina Saturday.
Witmer had missed the previous three games while playing with the U.S. National Team in the Pan America games, but returned just in time to provide the Terrapins (11-0, 3-0 ACC) with the edge.
With Maryland trailing 1-0 in Saturday’s match, head coach Missy Meharg used her timeout with 9:22 remaining in regulation. Just a shade over two minutes later, Witmer deflected in Mieke Hayn’s shot to tie the game.
Witmer struck again for the game-winner in the 7-on-7 overtime period. Senior Ali McEvoy made a defensive stop and got the ball to Witmer, and the Lancaster, Pa., native raced up the field and slung a backhanded shot into the net for the win over the Tar Heels (8-2, 1-2)
It is Witmer’s fourth weekly honor from the conference in her four-year career. She was named ACC Freshman of the Year in 2010 and named to the All-ACC Team in her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. She is also a three-time NFHCA All-American.
