COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team released its 2013 schedule Tuesday, which includes nine games against eight of the 16 2012 NCAA Tournament teams. The upcoming slate features matchups with the three other Final Four teams from last season.
The Terrapins advanced to the program's fifth straight Final Four last year and 15th under head coach Missy Meharg. Two of the other Final Four teams - Princeton and Syracuse - will come to College Park for matches. Thirteen of the Terps' 20 regular season games are against teams ranked in the final 2012 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches poll. Maryland will also play an exhibition game against 2012 Big Ten champion Penn State Aug. 23 in Lancaster, Pa.
"Based on the final 2012 national rankings, Maryland will play seven games vs. top 10 opponents and 13 top 25," Meharg said. "Opening with an exhibition game against Penn State will serve us well as we have a really competitive schedule ahead of us. We will look to increase our own attendance record in 2013 with home matches against ACC foes of Wake Forest, Syracuse and Virginia, while bringing in powerful out of league opponents in Princeton, Michigan and Old Dominion. We have a strong and exciting season coming up with a heavily weighted schedule to match our level of play."
The Terrapins will open the regular season vs. New Hampshire Aug. 31 in Temple's Conference Cup in Philadelphia with Temple and Ohio State also in the tournament. Maryland will also play its annual home-and-home matchups with Old Dominion.
In its home opener, Maryland will face off against Drexel on Sunday, Sept. 8. The following weekend, the Terps will host the annual Terrapin Invitational with American, Miami (Ohio) and Columbia.
Maryland will open ACC play vs. Wake Forest with a matchup on Friday, Sept. 20 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins will end the homestand with a 1 p.m. game vs. Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 22.
The Terrapins will face all three 2012 Final Four teams in North Carolina, Syracuse and the national champion Princeton Tigers in October.
The 2013 ACC Tournament will be held Nov. 7-10 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The NCAA First and Second Rounds will be the following weekend, Nov. 16-17, at campus sites. The 2013 NCAA Final Four will be Nov. 22 and 24 in Norfolk, Va.
The Maryland field hockey team led the nation in attendance for the third straight year in 2012, with 7,725 fans coming out to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex to catch the eight-time national champions in action.
