Terps Prepare for EAGL Tri-Meet

The Maryland gymnastics team takes on EAGL rivals Pittsburgh and North Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa. The competition will mark the third meeting between the Terps and each of the opponents.

Maryland (8-7, 4-6 EAGL) split the first two meetings with both North Carolina and Pittsburgh. The Terps won at home and lost on the road to each.

The Terps had two road meets in three days last Friday and Monday. In its most recent meet, Maryland posted a season-high 195.425 at George Washington in a tri-meet with New Hampshire. The Terps also posted a season-best score on bars with a 49.225. Maryland gymnasts set or tied personal records on every event and had individual first-place finishes on three.

Junior captain Stephanie Giameo tied her season-best all-around and beam marks, set a new season-best vault score and recorded a new career-high score on bars in the meet. Senior captain Ebony Walters finished first on floor with a career-high-tying 9.900.

In the Friday night showdown, Maryland finished third in a quad-meet at NC State. The host Wolfpack won the meet, followed by Pittsburgh second, Maryland third and William & Mary fourth. The Terps were just 0.300 behind the Panthers.

In Maryland’s first meeting with Pittsburgh, the Terps defeated the Panthers in a first-place finish in a quad-meet at Comcast Center. Pittsburgh finished second, George Washington finished third and Towson finished fourth. Maryland scored 0.325 ahead of Pittsburgh for the victory.

The Terps first competed against the Tar Heels in January where Maryland fell to North Carolina on the road. Maryland responded in the second meeting of the year and edged out the Tar Heels at home, 194.925 to 194.425, on Feb. 21.

In the victory, Giameo claimed the all-around title and senior Jessie Black notched a career best on bars with a 9.875.

In the most recent EAGL rankings, Maryland is No.4 in the conference with an average score of 193.947 and an RQS of 194.125. Nationally, the Terps rank No. 41.

Giameo is the No. 3 gymnast on beam in the EAGL with a 9.800 average score and a 9.820 RQS.  She is also No. 4 in the all-around with a 38.866 average score and a 38.940 RQS. Karen Tang ranks third on floor with a 9.834 average mark and a 9.845 RQS.

The meet marks Maryland’s last road competition of the regular season. The Terps return home next weekend for their final regular season meet before EAGL Conference Championships.

Scouting the Panthers

Pittsburgh is ranked No. 37 nationally and No. 3 in the EAGL Conference. The Panthers average 194.181 with an RQS of 194.395.

Maebelle Pacheco ranks fifth in the conference on vault with an average score of 9.796 and an RQS of 9.810. On floor, Pittsburgh claims two of the top five spots in the conference with Katie O’Rourke ranked second with a 9.828 average and a 9.845 RQS. Teammate Lindsay Offutt ranks fifth with a 9.825 average and 9.830 RQS. In the all-around, Brittney Harris ranks fifth averaging 39.683 with an RQS of 38.620.

Scouting the Tar Heels

North Carolina averages a score of 193.666 with an RQS of 193.880 and ranks No. 43 nationally and No. 6 in the EAGL.

In EAGL conference rankings, Janell Sargent claims the No. 1 spot on beam with an average score of 9.819 and an RQS of 9.795. The Tar Heels also have two of the top five gymnasts on bars. Haley Watts is fourth with an average score of 9.794 and an RQS of 9.795 and Megan Marenghi is fifth with an average mark of 9.625 and an RQS of 9.780. Watts also ranks third all-around with an average mark of 38.922 and an RQS of 39.035.
