Martir, White to Play in Summer All-Star Games

Kevin Martir and Charlie White of the University of Maryland baseball team have been selected to play in the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game and Northwoods League All-Star Game, respectively, as announced this week.

Martir is third on the North Adams Steeplecats with a .276 batting average and has scored 12 runs and driven in five in 24 games this summer. The rising sophomore catcher ranks second on the squad with five doubles. Martir will play for the West All-Star Team.

White is currently hitting .287 for the Eau Claire Express through 37 games and will play for the South All-Star Team. He also has 22 stolen bases, which ranks fourth in the league, to go along with 29 runs scored and 10 RBI. White, who was drafted in the 29th round by New York Yankees in the 2013 MLB Draft, will return to Maryland this fall after deciding not to sign with the Yankees.

The NECBL All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, July 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Robbie Mills Field, home of the Laconia Muskrats. The Northwoods League All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 23 at 7:35 p.m. (CST) at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wis.


Rising senior right-handed pitcher Jake Stinnett will to return to Maryland for the 2014 season. Stinnett was drafted in the 29th round of the MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but decided not to sign with the club.

Stinnett along with the Terps will be joined by incoming freshmen Nick Cieri and Michael Shawaryn. Both Cieri and Shawaryn were taken in the 32nd round of the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals, respectively, but remained unsigned at 5 p.m. deadline on July 12.
