Hello Terp Nation!
If you spent a rainy day Sunday in your living room watching television, chances are you may have come across a pair of exciting games which put Maryland Pride on full display for the nation to see.
Sunday afternoon on ESPN, the women’s basketball team – fueled by an impassioned pregame speech by head coach Brenda Frese – took down perennial powerhouse, top-seeded Tennessee to punch its ticket to the Elite Eight. Frese’s strong message to her players emphasized competing for the name on the front of the jersey so the country would witness just what Maryland is all about. And that they did. Make sure to catch the Terps as they face Louisville Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN for a shot at the Final Four.
Turn the channel to ESPNU and you found the fourth-ranked men’s lacrosse team battling rival Virginia at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Draped in distinctive Under Armour Wounded Warrior uniforms emblazoned with the American flag, the Terps put together a gutsy comeback against the Cavaliers for a 9-6 victory and move to 8-1 on the year.
Speaking of television, do not miss the still undefeated women’s lacrosse team as they look to avenge a triple overtime loss in last season’s national championship game when it travels to Chapel Hill for a No. 1 v. No. 2 showdown with North Carolina. The Terps picked up some clutch performances from their freshman class in a 10-9 win against No. 4 Boston College last weekend. Watch the Terps at noon Saturday against the Tar Heels on ESPN3.
Special congrats to Gary Williams who has been elected for enshrinement to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame induction Class of 2014. The enshrinement – slated for Sunday, Nov. 23, at the Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland in Kansas City - will have extra meaning for Terrapins fans, as the men’s basketball team is also scheduled to participate in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City Nov. 24 and 25. Iowa State, Alabama and Arizona State will also be competing in the tournament.
The baseball and softball teams continue to battle opponents in addition to the elements, having multiple games called due to weather. Baseball landed in the top 25 prior to losing both games of a doubleheader against No. 15 Clemson last Friday. Softball welcomes ACC newcomer for a doubleheader Wednesday in College Park. Women’s tennis also welcomes the Orange in its next home match this Sunday at 11 a.m.
Outdoor track & field is in full swing with the Terps competing in the Maryland Invitational last weekend. Junior Thea LaFond needed just three jumps to win two individual events, while Cici Onyekwere doubled in the throws to lead the Terrapin women. On the men’s side, Josh Haghighi won his second shot put competition in as many weeks and Derek Holland won the triple jump.
Two teams who have been able to escape this nasty winter are the men’s and women’s golf teams. The women’s squad picked up a stellar second-place finish from freshman Alexandria Papell at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in its last outing and the men’s team will look to improve from its steady showing at the Schenkel Invitational when it travels to the Rivers Landing Intercollegiate in North Carolina April 11.
Last but not least, good luck to the gymnastics team as they trek to the NCAA Regionals at Penn State this weekend. The Terps will compete against host No. 15 Penn State, No. 1 Florida, No. 12 Oregon State, EAGL-foe No. 23 New Hampshire and Kentucky at the regional meet. The top two teams at the regional will advance to the national finals in Birmingham, Ala., on April 18-20.
If you haven’t already done so, please make sure to mark your calendar for April 11 for football’s Red-White Game at 7 p.m. at Byrd.
As we continue to cheer our spring sports on to success, please take a moment to make your gift to the Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund. We are in the midst of our inaugural volunteer drive, and the early success is very encouraging. All TCSF donations go directly to benefit our student-athlete scholarships. What an impact!
