    Dear Terps,

News has come and gone recently regarding the new television contract between ESPN and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The new contract will increase exposure for all the sponsored sports in the conference through various multimedia outlets. Increased visibility on ESPNU and ESPN3 will aid our fans and fits in well with the plans being made for the ACC Digital Network, which translates into more Terps, on more media, more often. It's a good deal for Maryland and the ACC.

Other details of the new contract include an extension through 2027, as well as an increase of revenue from the previous contract, based somewhat on the addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the conference in 2013-14. Various media reports have the increase per school as being $4 million over the 15-year term of the deal. That's not exactly the reality, though. As is standard with these types of television agreements, the contract is structured to gradually increase payouts over the life of the agreement. In FY2013, for example, the increase to each school is expected to be just over $1 million. The payouts will average an additional $4 million per school, per year over the life of the agreement.

Unfortunately, this money will not assist the Save Our Sports campaign. The President's Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics took into account the expansion-related increase in the television contracts when it forecasted future revenue, prior to making the recommendation to discontinue sports. So the increase in the television contract is not "new" money for budgeting purposes.

Below is the current status of the Save Our Sports fundraising efforts:

    Acrobatics & Tumbling - $8,116
    Men's Tennis - $2,485
    Men's Track - $647,851.12
    Swimming & Diving - $306,602
    Water Polo - $33,736

We obviously still have a long way to go and I hope that you will help by answering this call to action to support these teams in any way possible before the June 30th fundraising deadline. Terrapin Nation is well known for stepping up in times of great need and we are at one of those pivotal times right now. Thank you in advance and Go Terps!
