Hello Terp Nation:
Welcome Back to Campus!
It is a very exciting time to be associated with the University of Maryland athletics! I had the privilege to be joined by some of our campus leaders, including Dr. Wallace Loh, to welcome back our student-athletes this past Tuesday evening at a reception at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
Sitting together in the north end zone boasting their Maryland Pride black t-shirts, each student-athlete and coach from Maryland's 20 varsity sports celebrated the beginning of a new academic and athletic year.
We are off to a tremendous start! In the first week of competition, our Terrapin teams went 7-1-1.
Last weekend alone, Terp teams picked up three wins over ranked opponents. A special congratulations to head coach Sasho Cirovski, who kicked off his 20th campaign at College Park, as his ninth-ranked men's soccer topped seventh-ranked Louisville, 3-0, in the home opener at Ludwig Field.
And how about our remarkable women's field hockey team ranked No. 1 in the country? Head coach Missy Meharg began her 25th season at Maryland with a pair of very impressive wins out West last week. The Terps outlasted No. 11 Stanford, 3-2, in the final seconds of a double overtime win in San Francisco and also defeated No. 16 California, 2-1.
Kudos to our volleyball team, who won the Villanova Classic last weekend, with a victory at host Villanova followed by wins against New Hampshire and Robert Morris.
Labor Day Weekend features a full slate of home events: Men's and women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball and football. Please see the list of home events at the bottom of this post.
Are you ready for the ultimate gameday experience? Our 2012 football home opener against William & Mary is on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. This is a fun and inexpensive way to enjoy the day with your family and friends.
We continue to strive to provide outstanding services and experiences for our alumni, students, fans and supporters at every game. College gamedays are always a special occasion and we believe Terrapin fans will enjoy the new and improved experience on campus this fall.
This season's edition of Terp Town will enhance the gameday experience outside the stadium by expanding Terp Town festivities, including live musical performances, several food vendors and food trucks, street teams roaming the parking lots and a new express shuttle service providing convenient transportation from the Comcast Center parking lots to Terp Town.
Saturday's game is also youth football day, so all youth football players get in for $10. We also have a great Family 4-pack for $40.
We are very proud of the men and women who represent our University and athletic department. We sincerely appreciate your support and enthusiasm for all of our programs. I looking forward to seeing all of Terp Nation at our numerous sporting events this weekend and throughout the fall semester.
Have a happy and safe Labor Day Weekend!
