COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team released its 2014 schedule Thursday, which includes games against seven of the 16 teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Terrapins will also host the NCAA National Championship for the third time in school history.

The Terrapins advanced to the program's sixth straight Final Four last year and 16th under head coach Missy Meharg last November. National semifinalist North Carolina will come to College Park for an early season matchup and 10 of the Terps' 18 regular season games are against teams ranked in the final 2013 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches poll.

In its first season as a member of the Big Ten, the Terrapins will face Big Ten co-champion Penn State at home. With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten, the Terrapins will be part of the largest field hockey conference in the country with nine teams.

“Our 2014 schedule is very exciting,” Meharg said. “In joining the Big Ten, we become the largest competing field hockey conference in the nation. The NFHCA postseason poll ranks six Big Ten teams in the Top 25 nationally. Our rich and long-lasting matchups with non-conference powers in Princeton, North Carolina, Old Dominion and American coupled with our new talented friends in the Big Ten gives our hockey fans and families what they are accustomed to with Maryland hockey - a fast, exciting tempo with outstanding female athletes. This is a great schedule and an exciting beginning for the Terps.”

The Terrapins will open the regular season in the Conference Cup tournament in Lancaster, Pa. They will play Massachusetts Aug. 29, then will close out the tournament vs. Northeastern.

In its home opener, Maryland will face off against North Carolina Sept. 5 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins beat the Tar Heels, 2-0, in the ACC Championship match in their last meeting.

Then, the Terrapins will host Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 7, then American, Towson, Drexel and Temple in the Terrapin Invitational Sept. 13-14.

Maryland will open its inaugural season in the Big Ten with three straight road games at Northwestern, then Michigan and Michigan State to close the month of September.

The Terps will open October with a four-game home stand with Ohio State, Old Dominion, Penn State and Penn before a midweek trip to Princeton on Oct. 15. They will return to home to host Rutgers on Oct. 19, then head to Indiana on Oct. 24. Maryland will end the regular season with home games against American and Iowa.

The 2014 Big Ten Tournament will be held Nov. 6-9 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The NCAA First and Second Rounds will be the following weekend, Nov. 15-16, at campus sites.

The 2014 NCAA Final Four will be Nov. 21 and 23 in the Terrapins’ home of the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins won the 2010 NCAA title on their home field with a 3-2 double overtime win over North Carolina for their seventh of eight national titles.
