ANNAPOLIS – A nearly full lineup will take the starting gun on Saturday when the University of Maryland women’s cross country team participates in the Salty Dog Invitational at the USNA Golf Club.

The women’s event is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. and will cover six kilometers.

Many of the Terrapins seniors did not participate two weeks ago at the Mount St. Mary’s Duals. Head coach Andrew Valmon says those seniors who trained through the 5K event at the Mount will see their first live action of the 2013 season at Navy.

“A lot of our veteran cross country runners will open up this weekend,” said Valmon. “We’ll pretty much run the full squad, except for a few people who are working on getting healthy.”

That should mean the first appearances of the year for seniors Becky Yep and Julie Sinkovitz, among others. Yep was Maryland’s first finisher at both the ACC Championship and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals a year ago, while Sinkovitz is coming off a strong indoor and outdoor track season at middle distance.

“This will be a good meet on a tough course with good competition,” said Valmon. “It will be a good test to see where we are from the few weeks of training we’ve had and our summer workouts.”

Also expected to run is Terp freshman Hannah Mansbach, who turned her collegiate debut into a seventh-place individual finish at the Mount, where Maryland finished with a 3-2 record in the round-robin dual scoring. Mansbach was one of only eight runners who cracked 19 minutes in the 5K race.

Maryland senior Bridget Nolan also had a top-10 finish at the Mount.

Host Navy won the Mount Duals two weeks ago behind junior Annie Norah Beverage, as the Mids swept the first three positions.

Maryland finished fourth in the Salty Dog Invitational last season. American, UMBC, Bowie State, George Washington, Howard and Loyola will also compete.
