McMurray Named Sr. Associate AD of Development

Maryland Athletics and University Relations announced today that Tim McMurray was named Senior Associate Athletic Director of Development/Executive Director of the Terrapin Club/Senior Director of Development and Alumni Relations. This position will have a dual report to the Assistant Vice President of University Relations and the Deputy Director of Athletics.

McMurray brings a wealth of knowledge and experience into his new role in College Park, he has served at the national level as President of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (2009-10) and also served six years on the NAADD Executive Committee. With 23 years of management and leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics, McMurray held senior level fundraising positions at both SMU and Northern Illinois.

At Maryland, McMurray will serve as athletics’ head fundraiser, unit manager and chief strategist. As a senior staff member of the athletics department, McMurray will collaborate with University Relations and other campus constituents on university capital campaign planning, future projects and all other fundraising initiatives. In addition, he will oversee all philanthropic giving for athletics through a wide range of initiatives and he will also oversee all aspects of planning, implementation and execution of intercollegiate athletics fundraising and alumni relations programs.

Prior to joining the Terrapins, McMurray spent the past three years (2010-13) as the Associate Athletics Director/Development and External Affairs with SMU.  McMurray had overseen three consecutive record years of the Mustang Club and overall annual giving growth for Mustang Athletics. For fiscal year 2013, which ended May 31, SMU again scored the "triple crown," setting records in all three fundraising categories - Total Athletics Giving, Athletics Annual Giving and Mustang Club Giving. In total more than $23 million was given to SMU Athletics in fiscal year 2013, continuing a steady growth that has seen total giving jump 268% over the last five years from $8.6 million to $23 million. .

Prior to joining SMU, McMurray was a Senior Associate Athletics Director at Northern Illinois University (2006-10). In that role, he was directly responsible for athletic development, including $24 million in capital projects and four years of sustained growth with the Huskie athletic support fund as well as supervision of marketing, promotions, and ticket sales units. He was also sports administrator for women's basketball, men's and women's golf, and was the point person on the 2007 NIU football coaching search.

In addition, McMurray served as an Associate Athletics Director/Development/External Affairs at Texas State University (2000-2006) and was the Executive Director of the Bobcat Athletic Foundation.

He began his career in athletics at Lamar University (1992-2000) and served in a myriad of positions within the athletics department. McMurray originally joined the Cardinals as the sports information director (1993-96) and then was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director/External Affairs, where he served as the sports supervisor for women’s basketball and the men’s and women’s golf programs.   

In addition to a Masters in Sports Administration from Ohio University, McMurray is a 1992 graduate of Lamar and is also a 2001 graduate of the Sports Management Institute.

McMurray and his wife, Vickie, have a daughter, Marley.
